MoMA PS1 Unveils Lady Pink’s New Mural Honoring 5Pointz
Graffiti icon Lady Pink's new large-scale mural, entitled Foundations, inaugurates MoMA PS1's outdoor commission program. This newly conceived annual initiative will invite artists to transform the museum's exterior walls with site-specific works into an outdoor museum.
Lady Pink’s piece is a powerful homage to 5Pointz, the legendary Queens graffiti mecca that was whitewashed in 2013. It serves as both a visual counterpoint and a tribute to her original mural, Green Mother Earth, which graced the facade of the 5Pointz building directly across from PS1, and was part of the $6.75 million landmark VARA award adjudicated against G&M Realty in 2020. The new mural features the tags of other iconic graffiti artists who contributed to 5Pointz’s legacy, including Toofly, Blade, Tracy 168, and, most importantly, its mastermind—Meres One.
It’s a full-circle moment for the iconoclast, who began writing graffiti in 1979 as a youth and by her late teenage years had redefined the trajectory of contemporary art. At just 17, Lady Pink had already garnered art world recognition, collaborating with artists like Jenny Holzer and exhibiting in prominent museums, such as the New Museum.
The artist reflected on her foray back to Queens in a recent Artnet article:
“I do wish that all the walls around PS1 were painted as 5Pointz used to be. That sheer energy is just so unique to New York.”
Seeing this mural is a rare chance to witness the late work of a legendary graffiti writer. For those unable to see it in person, Lady Pink is also currently featured in a solo exhibition, "Lady Pink: Miss Subway NYC," which opened last week (July 18, 2025) at D'Stassi Art in London. Check it out!
